Message from Wilma

Welcome to my web page for Chan for Senate 2008. The Democratic Primary is June 3 and the campaign is in full swing.

With your support, I was able to accomplish a lot during the six years I served in the California Assembly. I authored more than 55 new laws and measures including some of the toughest consumer-oriented healthcare and environmental bills in the nation.

When the Governor proposed cutting student financial aid and turning away 10,000 students who had already been admitted to UC schools, I led the successful fight against it.

After the Governor refused to repay public schools the $3 billion he borrowed, I launched a grassroots lobbying effort that helped to change his mind. In 2006, I won a $100 million expansion of pre-school in the budget.

If elected, I will continue to make children, education, healthcare, the environment and economic opportunities my top priorities.

Health access remains out of reach for more than 6 million Californians, including 800,000 children. Millions more are at risk of losing coverage. Untreated asthma, obesity and dental disease make it hard for children and teens to learn, creating barriers to a skilled and prepared workforce. Older adults face the threat of high drug costs and a fractured health system. We have made great strides but still have a long way to go to protect residents from dangerous chemicals and pollutants.

I have represented more than half of the Senate District in the Assembly and look forward to representing new constituents if elected. I'd like to expand some of the successful programs I implemented in my Assembly District, like adopt-a-school, nutrition education, and assistance to small businesses. I will fight to bring needed education, housing, transportation and other resources to communities that I represent.

I hope to earn your support and look forward to working with you in the months ahead.

Sincerely,

Wilma Chan
